INTRODUCTION
Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is located on the northern border of China, covering an area of 1.183 million square kilometers, making it the third largest provincial-level administrative region in China. As of 2022, its permanent population is approximately 24 million. Inner Mongolia has a long history, being the hometown of Genghis Khan and the birthplace of the Mongol ethnic group, with a rich grassland culture and nomadic traditions. It is famous for the vast Hulunbuir Grassland and Xilingol Grassland, as well as spectacular deserts like the Badain Jaran Desert and abundant mineral resources. Inner Mongolia is an important hub connecting China with Mongolia and Russia. Its unique ethnic customs, Naadam Festival, horse-head fiddle music, and Mongolian cuisine (such as hand-grabbed lamb and milk tea) make it a popular tourist destination.
I. Grassland Scenery Inner Mongolia's most unique tourism resource is its grasslands. Hulunbuir Grassland, known as the 'World's Most Beautiful Grassland,' is about 40 km from Hailar city center. The best time to visit is June-August. It is free to enter, but some pastoral experience activities charge fees (e.g., horse riding about 100 yuan/hour). Xilingol Grassland, located around Xilinhot city, is known as 'Grassland Paradise.' Visitors can attend the Naadam Festival (July-August), with tickets about 50 yuan.
II. Desert Adventure Badain Jaran Desert, located in Alxa Right Banner, is famous for the world's highest sand mountain (Bilutu Peak, 1,617 m) and its lake clusters. Tickets including transportation cost about 200 yuan. It is recommended to rent an off-road vehicle for deeper exploration (about 500 yuan/vehicle). The best season is May-October. Xiangshawan (Sand Bay) is located in Dalat Banner, Ordos, about 50 km from Baotou city center. Tickets cost 130 yuan, including cable car and desert entertainment, open 8:00-18:00.
III. History and Culture Genghis Khan Mausoleum is located in Ejin Horo Banner, Ordos, about 30 km from the city center. Tickets cost 120 yuan, open 8:00-17:30. It showcases the history of the Mongol Empire and holds a spring sacrificial ceremony. Xanadu (Shangdu) Site is located in Zhenglan Banner, Xilingol League, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 2012), about 350 km from Beijing. Tickets cost 50 yuan, allowing visits to palace ruins and grassland scenery.

IV. Food Recommendations Inner Mongolian cuisine mainly features beef, mutton, and dairy products. Hand-grabbed lamb is a traditional dish, recommended at 'Mongolian Camp' in Hulunbuir (about 100 yuan per person). Roasted whole lamb is common in grassland scenic areas, priced around 800-1,500 yuan per lamb. Milk tea (salty) is a daily drink, served with fried rice and milk skin, available at 'Gerile Ama' Milk Tea House in Hohhot (about 30 yuan per person). Additionally, dried beef and milk tofu (about 30 yuan/jin) are specialty souvenirs.
V. Transportation Guide Inner Mongolia's transportation is centered on Hohhot. Hohhot Baita International Airport has flights to major domestic cities and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Railways include the Beijing-Baotou and Baotou-Lanzhou lines, with high-speed rail to Beijing (about 2.5 hours). City transport mainly consists of buses and taxis. Renting an SUV is recommended for grassland roads. Long-distance buses connect banners and counties, e.g., from Hohhot to Hailar takes about 12 hours.
VI. Best Travel Season The best time to visit Inner Mongolia is from May to September, when the grasslands are lush and temperatures are pleasant (20-30°C during the day). Summer (June-August) is peak season, with Naadam Festival and grassland celebrations. Autumn (September) offers golden grasslands, ideal for photography. Winter (November to March) is cold (below -20°C), but visitors can experience Ice and Snow Naadam and hot springs. It is advisable to avoid the mid-July summer peak.
