Macao, officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is located on the west bank of the Pearl River Delta in southern China, adjacent to Zhuhai City in Guangdong Province, and facing Hong Kong across the Lingdingyang Sea to the east. With a total area of approximately 33.3 square kilometers (2024 data), it consists of the Macao Peninsula, Taipa Island, Coloane Island, and the reclaimed Cotai area, with a population of about 700,000 (2024 estimate). Since the 16th century, Macao was gradually leased by the Portuguese, becoming a unique window for Sino-Western cultural integration. It returned to China on December 20, 1999, under the 'one country, two systems' principle. As a world tourism and leisure center, Macao is globally renowned for its gaming industry, earning the nickname 'Las Vegas of the East.' II. Gaming and Entertainment: Cotai Strip Cotai is a reclaimed area dedicated to gaming, with large resorts like The Venetian, The Parisian, and City of Dreams. IV. Transportation Guide Macao International Airport (MFM) is in Taipa, about 8 km from the city center, with flights to mainland China, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan. High-speed rail can reach Zhuhai Station (about 1 hour from Guangzhou South) or enter via Gongbei Port. Local transport: buses (6 MOP, accepts Macao Pass), free casino shuttle buses (covering airport, border gates, major hotels), taxis (starting fare 19 MOP, about 2 MOP per km). V. Best Time to Visit Macao has a subtropical oceanic climate. Winter (December-February) is mild, 12-20°C, the best season with little rain. Summer (June-September) is hot and humid, 28-33°C, with frequent typhoons, but suitable for water activities.
