Helan Mountain Rock Art: A Prehistoric Epic on Stone
Overview: Ten-Thousand-Year Memories Etched on Rock
Helan Mountain Rock Art, located at the eastern foot of Helan Mountain in Yinchuan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is a large-scale and content-rich prehistoric art treasure. It is not a single site but a cluster of rock art stretching hundreds of kilometers along the Helan Mountain line, with the most concentrated and famous petroglyphs at Helankou, Suyukou, Daxifenggou, and Xiaoxifenggou. These rock art are records of life and spiritual totems carved or ground onto rocks by ancient ancestors over a long historical period, using stone as a pen and rock as paper. They are hailed as a "prehistoric epic on stone."
In 1996, Helan Mountain Rock Art was listed as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit by the State Council, and in 2008 it was included in the "China World Cultural Heritage Tentative List." The core area, the Helankou Rock Art Protection Zone, is the main destination for visitors to explore this prehistoric art gallery.
