Songtao Miao Autonomous County is located in the northeastern part of Guizhou Province, in the central part of Tongren City, at the eastern foot of Fanjing Mountain, the main peak of the Wuling Mountains. It borders Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hunan Province and is known as the 'Gateway to Eastern Guizhou.' Covering a total area of 3,409 square kilometers, it administers 4 subdistricts, 17 towns, and 6 townships, with a permanent population of about 480,000, of which the Miao population accounts for over 40%. It is one of the first three Miao autonomous counties established in Guizhou Province (founded in 1956).
