Qingdao May Fourth Square: The Coastal City's Spiritual Landmark and Political-Cultural Center
Overview
Qingdao May Fourth Square is located on Donghai West Road, Shinan District, Qingdao, Shandong Province. It is bordered to the north by the Qingdao Municipal Government office building and to the south by Fushan Bay, covering a total area of approximately 100,000 square meters. Construction began in 1996, and the square officially opened to the public in 1997, making it one of the core projects of Qingdao's eastern new city development. As a comprehensive square integrating commemoration, assembly, leisure, and sightseeing, May Fourth Square is named after the patriotic movement triggered by the issue of Qingdao's sovereignty during the May Fourth Movement, carrying the historical memory of modern China's national awakening. With the coastal landscape belt as its backdrop, the square is flanked by modern high-rise buildings, forming a unique urban skyline where mountains, sea, city, and islands blend. It attracts over 20 million visitors annually and is a must-visit destination in Qingdao.
