Mizhi County is located in the southeastern part of Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, deep in the Loess Plateau. It covers an area of approximately 1,212 square kilometers and has a permanent population of about 146,000 (2023 data). Mizhi was historically known as 'Yinzhou' and derives its name from the 'Mizhi River' (a tributary of the Wuding River), whose clear waters produce millet as lustrous as jade. It is renowned as the 'County of Culture, Heroes, and Beauties.' It is the hometown of Li Zicheng, the leader of the late Ming peasant uprising, and the legendary birthplace of Diaochan, boasting rich historical and cultural heritage. Mizhi is the only 'National Historical and Cultural County' in northern Shaanxi, famous for its cave-dwelling ancient city, paper-cutting, yangge dance, and suona folk culture. The county preserves rare Northern Song dynasty city ruins, Li Zicheng's Palace, and spectacular loess plateau gully landscapes, as well as attractions like 'Chuangwang Stockade,' making it an important destination for exploring northern Shaanxi history and folklore.
