About This Section
China is a unified multi-ethnic country: 91.1% of the population is Han Chinese, while 55 ethnic minorities, about 125 million people, have lived for generations across a vast territory stretching from the snowy forests of the northeast to the Tibetan Plateau, from grassland yurts to tropical rainforests. Their languages belong to five major families—Sino-Tibetan, Altaic, Austroasiatic, Austronesian, and Indo-European—and their festivals, dress, cuisine, and architecture each form distinct lineages.\nThis section opens this ethnic panorama in the manner of field notes: five regional atlases take you from the reindeer herding tribes of the northeast to the terraced villages of Yunnan, while features such as "Festivals" and "Song, Dance & Dress" lay out celebrations, ballads, and embroidery one by one. Diversity in unity—this is the very fabric of China.
