Wuhan Greenland Center: The Cloud Legend of Central China's Tallest Building
Overview
Wuhan Greenland Center is located at the intersection of Heping Avenue and Linjiang Avenue in Wuchang District, Wuhan, in the core area of the Wuchang Riverside Business District, adjacent to the Yangtze River, facing Hankou Riverside Park across the river. The project has a total construction area of approximately 323,000 square meters, with a building height of 475.6 meters, 100 floors above ground and 6 underground floors, making it the tallest completed building in Central China. The architecture was designed by the American firm AS+GG, with lead architect Adrian Smith. Wuhan Greenland Center is positioned as a 'world-class urban complex', encompassing a super five-star hotel (The Ritz-Carlton), Grade-A office space, high-end retail, and an observation deck. Construction began in 2011, the main structure was topped out in 2019, and it was fully operational in 2023.
History
I. Planning and Approval
In 2010, Greenland Group responded to Wuhan's strategy of 'building a national central city' by planning a super high-rise landmark project in the Wuchang Riverside Business District. The initial design height was 636 meters, intended to surpass the Shanghai Tower and become China's tallest building. In July 2011, the project officially commenced construction.
