Beijing Daxing International Airport: A Super Aviation Hub with Phoenix Spreading Wings
Overview
Beijing Daxing International Airport (IATA code: PKX, ICAO code: ZBAD) is a super-large international aviation hub located at the junction of Daxing District, Beijing and Guangyang District, Langfang City, Hebei Province. The terminal building covers an area of about 780,000 square meters, making it the world's largest single-terminal airport. The airport is positioned as a 'large international hub airport', forming a 'one city, two airports' pattern with Beijing Capital International Airport, with a long-term planned annual passenger throughput of over 100 million. The terminal design is inspired by the 'phoenix' imagery in traditional Chinese culture, with five corridors shaped like a phoenix spreading its wings, echoing the 'dragon' layout of Capital Airport, symbolizing 'dragon and phoenix bringing prosperity'.
History
The planning of Beijing Daxing International Airport began in the early 2000s. As Beijing's aviation volume continued to grow and Capital International Airport became saturated, building a second airport was put on the agenda. After the opening of Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital International Airport in 2008, the site selection for the new airport was officially launched. After multiple rounds of demonstration, the junction of Yufa Town, Lixian Town in Daxing District and Guangyang District in Langfang City was finally selected as the site.
