Chengdu Sunac Resort: A New Landmark for Snow and Ice Entertainment in Southwest China
Overview
Chengdu Sunac Resort is located in Yutang Town, Dujiangyan City, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, covering a total area of approximately 1,600 mu (about 107 hectares) with a total investment of about 55 billion RMB. The project is developed and operated by Sunac Cultural Tourism Group under Sunac China, and it is the 12th cultural tourism city in Sunac's national layout. The resort is centered around three indoor themed venues: 'Snow World', 'Water World', and 'Theme Park', supplemented by high-end hotel clusters, commercial streets, and bar streets, positioning itself as an all-season, all-weather comprehensive tourism resort destination. The project officially opened on September 19, 2020, and welcomed over 10 million visitors in its first year. The resort is about 60 kilometers from downtown Chengdu and only 5 kilometers from the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, located at the core of the 'Great Qingcheng Mountain Tourism Area'.
History
The construction of Chengdu Sunac Resort originated from the need to introduce high-end cultural tourism industries under Chengdu's 'West Control' strategy. In 2015, the Dujiangyan Municipal Government signed an investment agreement with Sunac China to launch the 'Chengdu Wanda Cultural Tourism City' project (later renamed after Sunac acquired Wanda's cultural tourism projects). The project officially started construction in 2016 and was completed and opened in 2020 after four years of construction. During construction, the project team overcame the complex geological conditions of the Dujiangyan area, especially the construction of the large-span steel structure of the Snow World indoor ski resort, with a main span of 174 meters, the largest of its kind in Asia. After opening in 2020, the resort quickly became a popular winter tourism destination in Southwest China, with a single-day visitor flow exceeding 80,000 during the 2021 Spring Festival. In 2023, the resort launched a second-phase expansion project, planning to add indoor ski slopes and themed hotels, expected to be completed by 2025.
