Chongqing Hongyadong: A Bayu Style Scroll on the Cliff
Overview
Hongyadong, officially known as Hongyadong Folk Custom Scenic Area, is located on Cangbai Road in Yuzhong District, Chongqing, at the confluence of the Jialing River and the Yangtze River. It backs onto the Jiefangbei business district and faces the Jialing River. It is a cluster of antique buildings built along the river and adapted to the mountain terrain. The scenic area is characterized by traditional Bayu stilted buildings, integrating the unique topography of Chongqing's mountain city, forming a three-dimensional spatial pattern of "one state, three wonders, four streets, and eight scenes." Hongyadong covers a total construction area of about 46,000 square meters, with the highest point reaching 13 floors. The buildings are layered and staggered. When the lights come on at night, it looks resplendent and magnificent, like a castle in the air suspended on the cliff, becoming one of the iconic landmarks of Chongqing's city image.
The name Hongyadong originates from an ancient city gate called "Hongyamen" that once stood here, said to have been built during the Warring States period by the Ba State and later renovated. During the Ming Dynasty, in the Hongwu era, Dai Ding, the commander of Chongqing's garrison, built a stone city on the old city foundation with seventeen gates, one of which was Hongyamen. Below the gate was the Jialing River, with steep cliffs and waterfalls, forming the "Hongya Drip Green" landscape, one of the Twelve Scenes of Bayu. The modern Hongyadong scenic area was completed and opened in 2006, invested and developed by Chongqing Little Swan Group. The designer, Wu Zhiqiang, drew inspiration from Chongqing's traditional stilted buildings and ancient town style, with the concept of "reproducing old Chongqing," quickly becoming a popular check-in spot.
